    Good morning everyone,

I wanted to see if anyone has started the process of implementing AI video observing tools into their Quality Assurance for printing? I have seen different tools for Digital Flexo presses, but we are looking more for offline capabilities to be used for sheets or individual pieces like Decals to inspect rather then by doing with the human eye. There are quite a few companies popping up and all of them say they can absolutely do this, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with a specific vendor at this point. I am happy to share what we find as we go down the road as well.

    Thank you!

Nathan...  we have not, but from my experience this is a perfect application for AI in the printing industry.  I think the biggest challenge will be implementing it across devices and processes.  I hope that this moves forward because it will help support the human element out of quality control and print quality management.

    Hi Nathan,

I did a project for an early bird entrant vision-control.com in the 90s all about machine vision in quality control in manufacturing sectors.

The whole machine vision groundwork makes such AI applications even possible if you asked me, then AI needs data, and machine vision collects that data, be it scanning chips, ships, or people, and a lot of it was programmed to react, toss out objects not meeting parameters, etc. well before anyone knew the catch AI.

The issue in the 90s was primarily integration. There were specialists in optic, sensors, logistics, software, etc., but you needed good integrators to pull it together for you.

The chips, early cell phone, medical device, etc. larger, higher tech manufacturers groomed this talent in house, and the rest scrambled to put together solutions. I just had a look and see VC is still a specialist, so they need partners or to help integrate their optics into overall machine vision solutions.

Have a look at Cognex, Keyence, Omron Microscan, all with decades of experience in machine vision, there are a couple more, the latter two of which are not surprisingly Japanese-rooted given their strong optics. In the meantime, I don't think it is too much to ask that a partner provide a turn-key solution for you, so avoid the rabbit hole of putting together the comprehensive solution yourself, then integration remains key. So your buzz words are machine vision quality control, maybe add AI-enhanced, but Idk if you really need to. High-quality fabric houses have surely been using MV for quality control, so look for proven applications, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Good luck, would be great to hear back from you!

Thank you for all of the info Georgette. We will look into these company recommendations and report back to the group if we have success. I am sure it will take a while. We appreciate the starting points.
